South Spencer Can’t Quite Erase 5-Run Deficit In Loss To Apollo
Despite a 5-run deficit in the eighth inning, South Spencer almost came all the way back, eventually falling 8-7 to Apollo on Monday. South Spencer scored four runs in the failed comeback on a single by Caleb Helms, a double by Sammy Rowan, and a by Brice Stuteville.
South Spencer was right in it until Apollo singled in the eighth inning
South Spencer captured the lead in the first inning. Sammy Rowan doubled on a 1-2 count in the first inning, scoring one run.
Apollo evened things up at three in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh inning Zach Hopewell drove in one run when he doubled.
Zach Greer earned the win for Apollo. He pitched seven innings, giving up three runs, eight hits, and striking out two. Hopewell recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Apollo. Dalton Schneider took the loss for South Spencer. He went one inning, giving up five runs, three hits, and walking one.
Brice Stuteville started the game for South Spencer. He went seven innings, allowing three runs, five hits, and striking out five.
South Spencer collected 12 hits. Rowan, Stuteville, Dylan Kelly, and Matthew Embry each collected multiple hits for South Spencer. Rowan went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead South Spencer in hits.
Apollo had eight hits in the game. Jakob Helms, Tommy Clark, and Hopewell each collected multiple hits for Apollo. Hopewell went 2-for-5 at the plate as he led the team with three runs batted in. Apollo was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Clark made the most plays with eight.
